Deck Fastener Calculator

Estimate face screws or hidden fastener clips from your board rows and joist count. Import counts from the board and joist calculators, then pick your installation system.

Fastening systems vary by brand

Hidden-fastener coverage, starter-clip rules, and screw patterns differ between products. Field-clip boxes are counted from field clips only; starter clips are estimated separately. Always follow the instructions for your selected product.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose face screws or hidden fasteners.
  2. Enter board rows and joist count, or import them from the other calculators.
  3. For face screws, set screws per intersection (commonly 2).
  4. Enter the pack size and choose a waste factor.

Formula with a worked example

Face-screw mode:

intersections = boardRows × joistCount
fasteners = ceil(intersections × fastenersPerIntersection × (1 + waste))
boxes = ceil(fasteners / fastenersPerBox)

For 26 rows, 13 joists, 2 screws per intersection and 10% waste:

intersections = 26 × 13 = 338
fasteners = ceil(338 × 2 × 1.10) = ceil(743.6) = 744
boxes = ceil(744 / 350) = 3

Face screws vs hidden fasteners

  • Face screws: two per board at each joist is typical. Simple and strong, with visible heads.
  • Hidden fasteners: clips fit into a groove on the board edge. Coverage per clip and starter-clip rules vary by brand.

Waste-factor guidance

Fasteners are inexpensive and easy to drop or strip, so a 10% allowance is sensible. See the waste factor guide for more.

Common mistakes

  • Using one screw per intersection when two are required.
  • Assuming all hidden-fastener brands share the same coverage.
  • Forgetting starter clips at the beginning of each row.
  • Ignoring fasteners for stairs and fascia.

Limitations & safety notice

Confirm with your product manufacturer

Fastener type, length, spacing, and corrosion rating must match your decking, framing, and environment. This estimate covers quantity only. Always follow the decking and fastener manufacturer instructions and local code.
