Formula with a worked example

Face-screw mode:

intersections = boardRows × joistCount
fasteners = ceil(intersections × fastenersPerIntersection × (1 + waste))
boxes = ceil(fasteners / fastenersPerBox)

For 26 rows, 13 joists, 2 screws per intersection and 10% waste:

intersections = 26 × 13 = 338
fasteners = ceil(338 × 2 × 1.10) = ceil(743.6) = 744
boxes = ceil(744 / 350) = 3

Face screws vs hidden fasteners

Face screws: two per board at each joist is typical. Simple and strong, with visible heads.
Hidden fasteners: clips fit into a groove on the board edge. Coverage per clip and starter-clip rules vary by brand.

How many deck screws do I need?

Multiply board rows by joist count to get intersections, multiply by screws per intersection, add a waste factor, then round up. For 26 rows, 13 joists, 2 screws per intersection and 10% waste that is ceil(338 * 2 * 1.10) = 744 screws.

How many screws per board at each joist?

Face-screwed solid boards commonly use two screws at every joist intersection. Follow your decking manufacturer instructions, which may differ for grooved or composite boards.

Do hidden fasteners use the same math?

No. Hidden systems vary by brand. This tool estimates one field clip per board/joist intersection and keeps starter clips as a separate figure. Always confirm coverage with your specific product.

How many boxes should I buy?
