Deck Planning Checklist

1. Before you measure

  • Confirm what permits and inspections your project requires with your local building department.
  • Locate property lines, setbacks, and any buried utilities.
  • Decide roughly where stairs and access points will go.

2. Measurements

  1. Finished deck length and width.
  2. Height above grade and any slope.
  3. Number and length of railing runs, including stairs and gates.
  4. Planned footing locations and count.

3. Design decisions

  • Board direction and any border or diagonal pattern.
  • Actual board width, gap, and stock length.
  • Joist spacing (12, 16, or 24 in on center).
  • Fastener system: face screws or hidden clips.

4. Build the material list

Run the numbers in order and save your deck project so each tool shares your inputs:

  1. Footing concrete
  2. Joists
  3. Boards
  4. Fasteners
  5. Railing

5. Verify before buying

Final check

Cross-check every estimate against your local code, your drawings, and the manufacturer instructions for your specific products. Estimates are a starting point, not a permit or an engineering approval.
