Methodology

How our calculators produce their estimates, and the assumptions we make.

Purpose

The calculators estimate material quantities for preliminary deck planning. They help you understand roughly how much material a project may require so you can budget and shop with more confidence. They are a starting point for planning, not a final construction document.

Calculation principles

  • Inputs are converted into canonical internal units before any calculation.
  • Full precision is used internally throughout the calculation.
  • Display values may be rounded for readability.
  • Purchase quantities are rounded up.
  • Waste is shown separately where applicable.
  • Imperial and Metric calculations represent the same physical dimensions.
  • Calculation assumptions are displayed alongside results.

Calculator methodology

Deck Board Calculator

  • Rows are based on actual board face width and the gaps between adjacent boards.
  • Physical stock-board quantities are kept distinct from total linear length.
  • Offcuts are not automatically assumed reusable without a verified cut plan.

Deck Joist Calculator

  • Estimates quantity and linear length from the distribution dimension, spacing, and span.
  • Does not size joists or validate structural capacity.

Deck Fastener Calculator

  • Face screws are estimated from board and joist intersections.
  • Hidden-fastener methods distinguish clips between adjacent board rows from per-intersection systems.
  • Manufacturer instructions govern actual requirements.

Deck Railing Calculator

  • Straight runs are divided into sections using the selected post-spacing assumption.
  • Baluster estimates use post width, baluster width, and a maximum clear-gap input.
  • Runs are counted independently; shared corner posts require layout review.

Deck Footing Concrete Calculator

  • Circular and square volumes use separate geometric formulas.
  • Bag quantities use the editable yield and the selected waste factor.
  • Product packaging governs the actual bag yield.
  • The calculator does not determine footing size or depth.

Rounding

  • Counts are whole numbers.
  • Purchase quantities round up.
  • Canonical values remain unrounded.
  • Small display differences after unit conversion do not change the stored physical value.

  • Current installation instructions.

  • Project-specific plans.
