How to Estimate Deck Materials

1. Work in the right order

Estimating a deck is easier when you follow the structure from the ground up, then finish with surfaces and railings. A reliable order is footings, framing (joists), decking boards, fasteners, and finally railing. Each step feeds the next, which is why saving one deck project lets the calculators share your numbers.

2. Measure and set a waste factor

Start with the finished deck length and width. Decide early whether you will estimate in imperial or metric and stay consistent. Then pick a waste factor: 5% for simple rectangles, 10% for most decks, and 15% for diagonal or bordered layouts.

Tip

Use actual board widths, not nominal. A nominal 6-inch board is usually 5.5 inches wide.

3. Estimate boards

The deck board calculator converts your deck size, board width, and gap into rows and linear feet, then rounds up to whole boards after waste. Board direction matters: boards along the length stack across the width.

4. Estimate joists and fasteners

Next, use the joist calculator for framing quantity, then the fastener calculator, which multiplies board rows by joist count to find intersections. You can import those counts automatically.

5. Estimate railing and concrete

Finish with the railing calculator for posts and balusters, and the footing concrete calculator for bags of concrete.

6. Full worked example

Consider a 16 ft by 12 ft deck with boards along the 16 ft side, 5.5 in boards, a 1/8 in gap, 16 ft stock, and 10% waste:

Boards: 26 rows, 416 ft, 457.6 ft with waste, 29 boards
Joists at 16 in OC across 16 ft: 13 joists
Screws: 26 × 13 = 338 intersections, 744 screws at 2 each + 10% waste
  1. Save the project in the board calculator.
