How to use this calculator
- Select units, then enter the dimension parallel to your deck boards. Joists run across this dimension.
- Enter the joist span, which is the length of each individual joist.
- Choose an on-center spacing of 12, 16, or 24 inches.
- Pick a waste factor to cover cutoffs and defects.
The tool returns joist count, total linear length, and length including waste.
Formula with a worked example
totalJoistLength = joistCount × joistSpan
totalWithWaste = totalJoistLength × (1 + wastePercentage)
For a 16 ft run at 16 in on center with a 12 ft span and 10% waste:
totalJoistLength = 13 × 12 = 156 ft
withWaste = 156 × 1.10 = 171.6 ft
Common spacing choices
- 16 in on center: the most common general-purpose spacing.
- 12 in on center: stiffer feel; often used for diagonal boards or thinner composites.
- 24 in on center: uses less material but requires suitable decking and framing; verify allowable spans.
Waste-factor guidance
Framing lumber comes in fixed lengths, so a 10% waste factor is a reasonable default for offcuts. Increase it if your span does not divide evenly into stock lengths. See the waste factor guide.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the wrong dimension. Joists run across the board-direction length.
- Forgetting the closing joist (the +1).
- Treating this quantity estimate as a span or sizing recommendation.
- Omitting blocking, rim joists, and doubled joists.
