Shared corner posts & code
Posts are totaled independently for each run. If two runs share a verified corner post, reduce the purchase count only after reviewing the actual layout. Max clear gap, post spacing, and railing height are estimating assumptions — confirm with local code and the railing-system manufacturer.

- Enter post width, baluster width, and the maximum clear gap.

Formula with a worked example

For a single 16 ft run with 6 ft maximum post spacing:
posts = 3 + 1 = 4
balusters are summed across all 3 clear sections
Planning tips for corners
- A corner post usually serves two runs; decide once whether to buy it under one run or the other.
- Gates and stairs interrupt runs, so enter them as separate runs.
- Balusters near a post are often trimmed, which the clear-section math already reflects.
Waste-factor guidance
Balusters are cut to length and occasionally split, so a 10% allowance is common. See the waste factor guide.
Common mistakes
- Treating the whole perimeter as one run and missing corner posts.
- Using post-center spacing instead of clear spacing for balusters.
- Assuming a code gap without verifying it locally.
- Forgetting the bottom rail.
